glossary of terms used in beauty therapy with their definitions.

Glossary of terms
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils,
fragrance oils, absolutes, carrier oils, and other fragrances from plants to
affect someone's mood or health, and is commonly associated with alternative
medicine.
Aesthetician
This is the scientific term used for a beautician.
Beauty Therapy
Beauty therapy is a type of alternative therapy treatment. Beauty therapy can be used in combination with traditional therapy (such as medicines) to aid in the treatment of ailments or health problems. It is also widely used to simply improve the general appearance of an individual and thereby lifting the mood of the person. Traditionally, the treatments are carried out in a high street salon.
Cleanse
Cleanse refers to the cleaning of the skin by removing oily residues, and helps rebalance the skin.
Client
This is you the customer, who pays for goods or services. All our clients are covered under the full public liability insurance. Our therapist will happily provide copies of her credentials and insurance on request.
Consultation
Consultation encourages a free play of thoughts and exchange of information between our therapist and yourself. Every effort should be made to provide ample time and means for comment once consultation is sought so that you choose the right product for you.
Cuticle
The dead skin at the base of a fingernail or toenail.
Distill
A process to remove impurities from, increase the
concentration of, and separate through the process of distillation. Distillation
is a means of separating liquids through differences in their boiling points.
Electrolysis
In hair removal, it is the practice of epilation with electrified needles. Electrolysis was originally the name for hair removal with direct current only (also called galvanic), although the term is generally applied to all three modalities of epilation with an electrified needle.
Endorphins
Chemicals in the brain that are responsible for
positive moods. They are natural opiates produced in the brain which function as
the body’s own natural painkillers (analgesic).
Epilation
The removal of hair below the skin's surface (as opposed to depilation). Epilation methods include plucking, waxing, electrolysis and laser.
Exfoliate
Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells from the surface which helps to make your skin looking fresh and radiant, and it also helps your moisturiser penetrate deeper in to the skin.
Extra Charges
Where the cost shown is not the real amount you will be charged. Extra charges are often hidden, and examples include VAT, transport, and labour costs. You will find no extra charges or hidden charges on our website. What you see is what you pay.
Facial
Deep cleansing of the face by various means
including; steam, exfoliation, extraction, creams, lotions, masks, peels, and
massage.
Galvanic
A process of hair removal. Please see Electrolysis.
Herbs
Plants containing many nutrients and phytochemicals, providing an array of health benefits. Herbs have been known for centuries, but are now becoming the basics of many modern medicines.
IFHB
International Federation of Health and Beauty Therapists. This is an organisation to which our therapist is a member of.
Macerate
To soak a food (usually fruit) in a liquid in order to infuse it with the liquid`s flavor. A spirit such as brandy, rum or a liqueur is usually the macerating liquid.
Manicure
A manicure is a cosmetic beauty treatment for fingernails and hands. A manicure can treat just the hands, just the nails, or both. A standard manicure usually includes filing and shaping of the nails and the application of polish. Some specialty manicures, such as the French Manicure, may also be offered. Treatments for hands usually include soaking in a softening substance and application of hand lotion.
Massage
Massage is the practice of applying pressure or vibration to the soft tissues of the body, including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, and joints. A form of therapy, massage can be applied to parts of the body or successively to the whole body, to heal injury, relieve psychological stress, manage pain, improve circulation and relieve tension.
Moisturisation
This is a treatment through the application of a gel or lotion to reapply moisture (or water) back in to your skin. The treatment is useful in preventing the drying of skin.
Mobile Beauty Therapy
Mobile Beauty therapy is a type of alternative therapy treatment which is carried out in the comfort of your own home. The advantage to this is there is no need to find parking spaces and suffer from the hustle and bustle of the high street, just after you have been relaxing.
Oils
Oils, usually referred to as Essential oils are typically used in Aromatherapy treatments. Essential oils are highly concentrated aromatic extracts which are distilled or macerated from a variety of aromatic plant material including grasses, leaves, flowers, needles & twigs, peel of fruit, wood and roots.
Pedicure
A pedicure is a way to improve the appearance of the feet, and their nails. It basically is a manicure for the feet. The word pedicure comes from the Latin words pes, which means foot, and cura, which means care. It also means the care of the feet and toenails. A pedicure can be helpful because it can prevent nail diseases and nail disorders.
Sinuses
These are small cavities in the skull behind the eyes and nose. This is where most vocal resonance occurs.
SPF
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. A scale for rating the level of sunburn protection in sunscreen products. The higher the SPF, the more sunburn protection it provides. Sunscreens with an SPF value of 2 through 11 provide minimal protection against sunburns. Sunscreens with an SPF of 12 through 29 provide moderate protection, which is adequate for most people.
Stud
A simple style of earring for pierced ears that has a single stone (such as a pearl) or metal ball on a straight post with no dangling parts.
Tanning
This is the process in which skin pigmentation darkens as a result of exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun or sun beds. However, this has the result of inducing premature aging of the skin, and is not provided by beauty@home. Instead we provide St. Tropez tanning which provides a natural looking tan without ageing your skin.
Therapist
This is a person skilled in a particular type of
therapy. beauty@home therapists are qualified in the area of beauty therapy,
known as an Aesthetician.
Toner
Toner will help to unclog and close up your skin pores, helping to prepare the skin for moisturisation.
Waxing
Waxing is a temporary method of hair removal which removes the hair at the root. New hairs do not grow back in the waxed area for three to eight weeks. Almost any area of the body can be waxed, including eyebrows, face, bikini area, legs, arms, back, abdomen and feet.
